Kumo no chaya — the cloud teahouse
A teahouse
above the clouds
Nine seats. One kettle. The weather does the rest.
We open when the cloud does.
The Ceremony
Four movements,
no hurry between them.
There is a way to do this and the way is slow. Guests learn it in one sitting and forget it usefully by the second.

01
You are met
The path narrows to a stone. You leave the day at the low door and enter bent — everyone arrives humble, which is the point.
-
02
The room settles
Water finds temperature. Iron ticks as it warms. We do not fill the silence; the kettle will speak first, and it does.
-
03
Tea is made
Whisk to a soft cloud, no foam for its own sake. The bowl is turned so the fair face meets you. Two hands. One breath in.
-
04
You leave lighter
The last sip is loud on purpose. You thank the bowl, not us. Outside, the cloud has moved and taken an hour with it.
The Room
Four and a half mats,
drawn from memory.
A sōan — grass hut — plan. Nothing here is decoration; each line does one job and stops.
The Mountain
Getting here
is half of it.
Take the valley train to its last stop. The town ends; keep walking.
A cedar path, then switchbacks. Forty minutes of your own breathing.
You'll pass through the cloud rather than over it. Damp, then suddenly bright.
A wooden gate, a bell rope. Ring once. We heard it warming already.
Bring layers and an appetite for stopping. Phones lose signal at the treeline, which we consider part of the service.
Reservations
Reserve a pot
Two seatings a day, weather permitting. We hold nine seats and no more. Tell us who's coming and which season you're chasing — we'll write back by hand.
