Five hands
between field & folio

No map leaves the atelier without passing through each of these. The order never changes; the country always does.

  1. Survey

    We pace the imagined ground on foot, sighting each rise through a theodolite of our own invention. The field-book fills with bearings, doubts, and weather.

  2. Draught

    The survey is fair-drawn in reverse, the projection chosen to flatter the terrain. Water is settled first; the land is made to lean toward it.

  3. Engrave

    A burin is pushed through polished copper, one contour at a time, the whole country held backwards in the mind. This is the slow hour — the one you are watching the machine imitate on every plate of this page.

  4. Proof

    The first pull is a confession. Slips are burnished out, coastlines deepened, elevations re-lettered until the proof and the intention agree.

  5. Press

    Dampened rag paper meets the inked plate under a ton of rolling iron. The edition is struck, numbered, and left to dry between blankets like a season of laundry.

Proportional Dividers

Brass & blued steel · adjustable fulcrum

Reduce a coastline to any scale by the turn of a single screw. The atelier's most-argued-over tool.

The Lozenge Burin

Tempered tool-steel · mushroom handle

The graver itself. Held in the palm, pushed — never dragged — it lifts a thread of copper and leaves a line that will outlive the map-maker.

Pantograph

Mahogany arms · ivory tracing-point

Trace the survey with one point and a second draws it enlarged. A parallelogram that keeps its temper better than the engraver.

Beam Compass

Ebony beam · sliding trammels

For arcs too proud for an ordinary compass — meridians, rhumb-lines, and the occasional halo drawn over a saint's island.

Planimeter

Nickel wheel · vernier drum

Roll its arm around any coastline and it confesses the area within. Indispensable when a client asks the price of a country by the acre.
